202 Wildflowers Machine Embroidery with Kathy Johnson

Emboidery Applique

Do you have an embroidery machine but are not using it? Here is your chance to learn to use your embroidery machine for applique on a quilt. Before class you will need to be able to access the embroidery designs. The method for this will vary on different machines, some will be able to insert the CD, some you will be able to save on a USB stick, some will need to have their laptop along to connect to their machine. Patterns can be ordered from The Bent Pin in Williston or Heirloom Creations in Souix Falls, SD.

Basic Supplies Needed:
Embroidery unit
Fusible web
Mini iron -these can be shared

SCS, BK, SM and RCE

Fabric Needed:

The fabric requirements are included in the pattern for several different quilt sizes. Refer to the pattern for the requirements for the size you are choosing to make. The pattern also includes the thread color charts for the embroidery.

203-Cake Boxes with Norma Lee Miller

Cake Boxes

This pattern is from a book by Sharyn Craig titled Layer'em Up #2 Basically Boxes. This is a 'Layer Cake' friendly project or you can cut your own 10" squares from fabric in your stash. I will warn you though I became totally addicted to making these blocks. Sharyn gives guidelines for cutting the squares and then she suggests you try randomly cutting. When I started randomly cutting is when I became addicted. I became obsessed with seeing what the next group was going to look like. This is a stack, slice, scramble, sew, square up project. For each 10" square you use you will have one 8" finished block. We will be stacking the 10" squares in groups of six. You will need a new sharp blade.
The book will be required. You will need a minimum of 12 dark/medium 10" squares and 12 light 10" squares for class. You will need a rotating cutting mat or a small mat than can be turned easily for cutting the 10" squares. I will also demo how I determined what my random cuts were going to be. I used graph paper to decide on my random cuts. If you have graph paper bring some along with a pencil and an eraser.
The Layer'em Up Volume 2 book gives instructions for both straight sets and on point settings in sizes from wallhanging to king size quilts. There are also instructions for using different size starting squares. Once you learn this method the design opportunities are tremendous.
This is a project that both beginners and seasoned quilters should enjoy doing.

FABRIC REQUIREMENTS

12 to18 light 10" Squares
12 to18 dark/medium 10" Squares
NOTE: Bring the squares in multiples of three (3 light with 3 dark/medium). Each stack of 6 will have 3 light and 3 dark/medium. The more squares you have the more variety of cuts you can try.
It is absolute essential that you come to class with the fabrics well pressed and a new sharp blade in your rotary cutter.

Other yardage requirements for border and if needed the setting triangle are found in the book on pages 30 and 31.
I think it is best to wait until all the blocks are made to decide on the border fabric.

SUPPLIES LIST

6" X 12" ruler
8 ½" or 9 ½" square ruler * see note below
Rotating cutting mat (if you have one) **see note below
45mm Rotary Cutter with a new shape blade
Sewing Machine in good working order with a sharp needle
Quarter Inch Foot for your sewing machine (if you have one)
100 % cotton Neutral Thread (have one bobbin wound please)
Basic sewing supplies should include
Scissors (small nipper type will be good)
Sharp Seam Ripper
Silk Pins (I prefer the glass head pins)
Extra needles for your sewing machine
Graph Paper, Pencil and Eraser (optional)
Layer'em Up Volume 2 Basically Boxes-- by Sharyn Craig (required)

*NOTE- The 8 ½" or 9 ½" square ruler works the best for this project if you do not have that size square ruler bring a larger square ruler.
**NOTE- if you do not have a rotating mat you could use a small cutting mat that a 10" square would fit on. You will need this small cutting mat when slicing the squares and squaring up your blocks after they are pieced. You need to be able to turn and rotate the mat when you are slicing the 10" squares and again when squaring up the pieced blocks.

205-Flannel Flowers with Jula Melhoff

Pattern Fee: $5.00 (Pattern purchase required)
Class Level: Beginner on up
Fabrics: Works best with Flannels or Homespuns

Description:

This soft, simple lap size quilt is fun and easy to make. You will learn an interesting technique by folding flannel to create a sort of flower shape in the block. The blocks are put together using a zigzag stitch so they go together quickly. You may have most of your blocks and some of the rows completed in a full day class. This quilt could be fully assembled in one week-end and is easily made larger or smaller. No batting, no backing, and no quilting is necessary.

Basic Supplies Needed:

Use this list as a guide—bring more or less to class. Nice thing about this quilt is that there is virtually no waste and you can continue to add blocks making it larger or smaller. The material list and cutting instruction contained here will produce approximately 36" x 42" consisting of 8 rows of 7 blocks.

Fabric Needed:

The flannel fabric is all you need. There is no need for batting and it is quilted as you go. Each block showcases three different fabrics. Select your fabrics accordingly. These are the fabrics I used:

1/2 yard feature fabric
1 yard solid white
1 yard solid green
1 yard solid yellow
1 yard pink print/texture
1 yard yellow print/texture
1 yard green print/texture
1 yard blue print/texture

Thread—top and bobbin both should blend well with your fabrics.
Fray-resist liquid
Sewing machine must be able to do zigzag stitch
Large 10" or larger square ruler
Small 6 1/4" or 4" square ruler
